Scanning Tips

It is important that the scanned image you send to us is of a appropriate standard, as it is difficult for us to restore an image if it is too small, or too dark, or lacks quality etc.

Here are some tips to help you scan your photographs:

  • Scan your photo at a resolution of 300dpi or higher (no more than 600dpi). Image resolution refers to the number of 'dots per inch' in a scanned image - an image with a greater number of 'dots per inch' is considered higher 'quality', and is suitable for restoration;
  • Use a standard colour setting like RGB (Always scan in colour, even if your photograph is black and white);
  • Save As a JPEG file - the extension for which is .jpg or .jpeg (for example image.jpg).
  • When saving as JPEG, ensure that no quality is lost through file compression. In other words, ensure that the quality of the saved image is good as it can be (100%). File compression is useful when trying to minimise the file size of an image, but when sending images to Fix My Pix, larger files are welcome!

All scanners and scanning software operate in slightly different ways, and may use different terminology. For further guidance, consult your scanners user manual for information specific to your scanner.
